Parent FAQs
What is Parent Orientation?
Parent Orientation is an event that gives parents and families of students attending Memorial an opportunity to be introduced to the campus and what it has to offer. There are welcome speeches from university officials, a Q&A session with representatives from various departments on campus, a career session, a tour, and a reception to get some snacks and ask questions to representatives and students.
Do I have to go?
Parent Orientation is not mandatory to attend. However, we welcome any and all families that wish to attend to get the information they need to help their student start their university life.
What will I get from it?
Parent Orientation is designed to give parents and families the information they need regarding their student entering university. There will be information on how to help with and feel a part of your student's transition to the university (and potentially a new city). There will be opportunities to learn more about the campus itself and its services.
Can I attend student orientation events with my student?
Yes, parents are able to attend. However, the events on Monday September 3rd are designed to give students a social introduction to the campus and therefore the information a parent or family member may need to help with their student's transition will not be communicated to you. By attending parent orientation instead, you will receive the information you need while your student attends their own orientation.
Will there be food available?
Yes – there will be tea and coffee with some snacks in the morning before 12:00pm. There will also be some small treats during the reception from 3:30pm-4:30pm in the Landing.
Does it cost anything to attend Parent Orientation
All orientation programs at Memorial are free for participants.
Where can I park?
TBD - We will have more information in August about parking availability on the days of Orientation.
If I have to leave during part of the event, can I come back?
Yes – before you leave, ask a volunteer where the events will be when you return so you can join in with the events.
Do I need to bring anything?
There are no materials needed for orientation. However, we suggest wearing comfortable footwear, as there is a campus tour that you may choose to participate in.
Will there be a chance to pay tuition?
Due to the Labour Day holiday, the cashier's office is not open on Monday, September 3rd. However, you may still pay online through your student's self-service account by credit card. This can be done at any time.
Will there be a chance to buy books?
Yes! The Memorial University Bookstore (UC-2006) will be open from 12:00pm-5:00pm. The campus tour ends in the University Centre (UC) so your tour guide can direct you there.
