Janice E. Parsons is an Assistant Professor at Memorial University, teaching primarily in the areas of critical thinking and theory, ethics, work with groups and communities, inter-professional education and leadership and social work supervision. She is also a Faculty Associate with the Centre for Collaborative Health Professional Education, MUN and acts as a Teaching Supervisor with the Graduate Programme in Teaching, MUN.

She holds a Graduate Diploma in Social Administration and an M.S.W. (Area of Concentration: Individual, Family and Group Treatment) from Wilfrid Laurier University, a B.S.W. (Honours) from University of Windsor, and a B.A. (Sociology) from Memorial University of Newfoundland. Her academic work follows social work practice, primarily in the fields of child welfare and developmental (dis)Abilities, including both direct practice and administration.

Professor Parsons’ areas of research and scholarly interest include: marginalization, oppression, poverty, social class, gender, identity, social inclusion, lone mothers, welfare, social work education, social work supervision and research ethics. Her work employs anti-oppression, feminist, and postmodern perspectives and qualitative research designs.

Currently funded research is a SSHRC Community University Research Alliance (CURA), entitled “Lone Mothers: Building Social Inclusion”. She is the lead investigator for the St. John’s site of this national longitudinal study. (More information can be found through the link under "Related Content")

Professor Parsons, a Registered Social Worker, holds membership in the NL Association of Social Workers; Canadian Association of Social Work Educators; Canadian Association for the Study of Women in Education; and is former Chair, Interdisciplinary Committee for Ethics in Human Research (ICEHR), at Memorial. Also, she volunteers with Eastern Health at Saint Luke’s Homes.
