The Gathering Place is a service centre committed to building community, promoting equality and providing nourishment. It exists to meet the needs of people whom society has failed. The programs and services of the Gathering Place are offered primarily to people who are homeless or live in less than desirable housing conditions, people who
are often unemployed and to people who do not have adequate social supports at this time in their lives.

The goal of Gathering Place is to foster among guests independence, self-respect, and dignity. Further, interdependence and personal growth are cultivated through a network of community partnerships.

Job Description
This position is designed for students, who are passionate, professional, caring and patient, and who seek an experience in the community-social enterprise sector. Working with the team at The Gathering Place and under the supervision of the Outreach Coordinator, the student will assist in supporting social enterprise activity of the Gathering Place. For example, the student be assigned sales & marketing tasks for the community garden. The student will also assist with other related tasks (e.g. front desk reception, working with volunteers in the kitchen) with a focus of making a positive contribution to this organization to help marginalized people in the community. The successful candidates will work approx. 10 hours per week. Orientation and an
onboarding phase in will be provided.

Preferred Skills
Many of our Guests have complex issues ranging from physical illness and mental health problems to learning disabilities and addictions. The ideal candidates should:

  • Be a senior student at the Faculty of Business Administration
  • Motivated to learn about and gain work experience a non-profit environment
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills
  • Effective communication skills, orally and written
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment
  • Standard First Aid certificate or Mental Health First Aid Certificate is an asset

The ideal candidate is dependable, responsible, and able to work independently as well as a member of a team. Understanding of or previous exposure to social issues is an asset.
