Doug Furey - PhD Candidate

Doug Furey, PhD candidate, Faculty of EducationFor St. John’s native Douglas Furey (PhD), there’s no place like home.

Douglas has travelled as part of his studies with the Faculty of Education, but it is the expertise of educators such as Dr. Jean Brown and Dr. Bruce Sheppard that help to make Memorial his “home” university.

His research focuses on educational leadership, distance education and classroom practices. He is particularly interested in individual cognitive ability and self-determination.

He is writing his thesis on student learning practices and student’s perceptions of teacher instructional practices.

As for advice to future grad students, Douglas stresses the importance of finding a supervisor who understands your approach to learning.

Douglas hopes to secure an academic position at Memorial to pursue his love of teaching. He also hopes to continue to work with the Community University Research Alliance (CURA) Killick Project.
