English as a Second Language Support Programs

Memorial University offers an array of services for students for whom English is a second language. Services vary from full semester group programs to individualized assistance, and online resources.

  • Intensive English Program
    The Intensive English Program at Memorial University of Newfoundland is a 12-week multi-skill program for students, both graduate and undergraduate, who are preparing for full-time university studies conducted in English, or who wish to improve their English communication skills for business or professional purposes. Students may apply for provisional admission to Memorial at the same time as they apply for this program. Successful completion of the Intensive English Program together with an acceptable score on the test of English language proficiency given at the end of the program may allow students to finalize their admission to a university program.
  • Conversational Partners
    Students in special programs offered by the Department of English may join the Conversation Partner Program which matches international students with local students for extra practice in conversational English.
  • English as Second Language Resource Centre
    The Department of English maintains the English as a Second Language Resource Centre, which has a collection of reference and teaching materials to assist its instructors and tutors in the preparation of courses in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Audio and multimedia English language learning materials are available for use in the university language labs.
  • Online Resources for Assistance with Writing
    The Writing Center has created a web-based resource list for students for whom English is a second language. This website provides links on grammar, style, and punctuation.

ISA Family Program
The goal of the ISA Family program is to aid international student families transition into a new environment and overcome any challenges they make experience. Information is provided on schools, daycares, health care, local community supports and services, parenting resources, local attractions and family tax benefits.

Orientation for International Students
The International Student Advising Office provides information on the orientation program for Memorial as well as on specific activities and events for international students.

Transition Services
The International Student Advising Office provides information on programs, events, clubs and societies that will help international students become integrated into the Memorial community.

Welcoming Support for International Students
The International Student Advising Office provides support to current and new international graduate students. Some of the areas of support are airport pick-up, temporary housing, orientation, health insurance, and immigration information.

Writing Support for International Graduate Students
The Writing Centre offers individual writing tutorials, by appointment, for international students working on their proposals and/or theses. It can also offer group workshops on elements of graduate-level academic writing if students or their professors request them.
