Workplace Professional Skills
Many employers recognize the importance of professional skills that go beyond disciplinary expertise. Professionals require skills in areas such as communications, interpersonal relations, project management and leadership. This workshop will provide students with an overview of the research in this area, resources available to learn more about the skills that are sought after by employers and a deeper understanding of the types of workplace professional skills that are important in today's labour market.

A professional résumé and cover letter are critical to securing an interview in today's competitive job market. Learn how to market your skills and experience effectively on paper so you stand out above the rest. This workshop covers the essentials of résumé construction and offers guidelines to writing cover letters that effectively sell your skills.

Creating a Curriculum Vitae (CV)
The creation of a CV differs from that of a résumé. It is geared towards graduate students looking for employment in the world of academia but also can be useful for other employment opportunities (such as consulting and research). This workshop identifies the critical components of a CV and offers tips on presentation and style.

Midterm Break
Academic Job Search
The purpose of the workshop is to identify effective strategies for completing an academic job search, review what should be included in an application package and to identify where to look for academic positions. The process involved once you have been contacted by the institution to which you have applied will also be discussed.

Social Media and the Job Search Process
This workshop aims to build an understanding of the role of social media in the job search process. Information is provided on how the use of social media sites can increase your exposure and enhance your ability to make professional connections. Participants will also be introduced to developing an online professional profile and how to follow up with the connections made online in order to gain insight into their chosen career path.

Marketing Me: Professional Networking and Informational Interviews
This workshop will provide students with a better understanding of networking and its role in the job search process. The steps involved in preparing for and following up from networking opportunities will be presented. Participants will learn how to build and maintain their networks and the etiquette of both strategic and serendipitous networking.
