The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) is an arm's-length federal agency that promotes and supports university-based research and training in the social sciences and humanities. Created by an act of Parliament in 1977, SSHRC is governed by a 22-member Council that reports to Parliament through the Minister of Industry.

SSHRC INSIGHT GRANTS COMPETITION 2011
Deadline: October 15 The new Insight Grants program supports research excellence in the social sciences and humanities. Funding is available to both emerging and established scholars for long-term research initiatives. Insight Grants research initiatives may be undertaken by an individual researcher or a team of researchers working in collaboration. The maximum value of an Insight Grant is $500,000 over three to five years. A minimum request of $7,000 is required in at least one of the years. A maximum of $200,000 is available in a single year. The total budget for new awards in this competition is approximately $100 million disbursed over five years. This budget may be adjusted subject to the volume and quality of applications received in the competition. These, along with the size of the budgets requested and awarded, will determine the number of new grants awarded in spring 2012. Full program details are available on SSHRC's website.

Grants Crafting Consultant – Once again this year, Dr. Rosemary Ommer, a Grants Crafting Consultant will work in conjunction with Unit Grants Facilitators/Research Grants Officers. Dr. Ommer will provide extensive feedback on grant application content, focusing on idea development and marketing the application for SSHRC committees. SSHRC Aid to Research Workshops and Conferences in Canada

The broad purpose of this funding opportunity is to support workshops held in and outside of Canada, and conferences held in Canada. The funding opportunity's specific objectives are to advance research and scholarship on issues of intellectual, cultural and social importance by facilitating direct interaction among researchers and students, both from Canada and abroad; promote research development, linkages and knowledge mobilization among disciplines and across institutions, sectors, linguistic groups and regions; and enhance the visibility and profile of social sciences and humanities research.
Grants are available to help defray the costs of organizing workshops inside and outside of Canada and conferences in Canada.The value and period of tenure of a workshop grant is up to $25,000 for a workshop held within 12 months following the announcement of competition results. The values and periods of tenure of conference grants are: up to $25,000 for a conference of up to 200 participants that is held within 12 months following the announcement of competition results; up to $35,000 for a conference of 201 to 400 participants that is held within 12 months following the announcement of competition results; and up to $50,000 for a conference of more than 400 participants that is held within the 12 months following the announcement of competition results. Public Outreach Grants
Deadline: November 28, 2011**(Please note the updated deadline) Public Outreach Grants are designed to mobilize and/or leverage existing and ongoing research in the social sciences and humanities for a range of audiences beyond academia. Through this funding opportunity, SSHRC encourages researchers to find effective ways to disseminate, transfer, exchange, synthesize and broker research results to wider audiences. Funding is available for knowledge mobilization events in the open category or any of SSHRC's priority areas:

Partnership Development Grant: Dissemination or Workshops and Conferences
Deadline: November 30, 2011
SSHRC provides funding for research and knowledge mobilization initiatives involving a formal partnered approach. Formal partnerships can be among postsecondary institutions, or between the academic and public, private and/or not-for-profit sectors. They can be disciplinary or interdisciplinary, and can include both Canadian and international partners. Partnership Development Grant proposals are expected to respond to the objectives of the Insight program or the Connection program, or a combination thereof. (Please see the Insight and Connection program descriptions for more details.) Partnership Development Grants provide support of $75,000 to $200,000 over one to three years to teams/partnerships, led by a project director, to: develop research and related activities in the social sciences and humanities, including knowledge mobilization and the meaningful involvement of students and new scholars, by fostering new partnerships for research and related activities involving existing and/or potential partners; or design and test new partnership approaches for research and/or related activities that may result in best practices or models that either can be adapted by others or have the potential to be scaled up to a regional, national or international level. Insight Development Grants
SSHRC continues implementation of its renewed program architecture with the launch of the Insight Development Grants funding opportunity. The description is now available on the SSHRC website at the following link: http://www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca/funding-financement/programs-programmes/insight_development_grants-subventions_de_developpement_savoir-eng.aspx .This funding opportunity offers grants in support of research in its initial stages. The grants enable the development of new research questions, as well as experimentation with new methods, theoretical approaches and/or ideas.
This new opportunity is open to both new and regular scholars who are affiliated with an eligible Canadian post-secondary institution. The deadline for submitting applications is February 1, 2011; the application form will be available in November 2010.

Grants Crafting Workshop
Dr. Rosemary Ommer---Grants Crafting consultant will give a presentation "Read the Guidelines" on writing grant proposals to SSHRC for interested faculty on Tuesday, September 21st from 12:00 to 2:00 in the Dean of Arts Boardroom A5014, 5th floor Arts building.Dr. Ommer has sat on , chaired committees for SSHRC, NSERC and CFI and has 15 years experience in grants crafting. She will address issues of content, style, budget justification, track record etc as well as other things that are part of a successful proposal writing.
