The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) is an arm's-length federal agency that promotes and supports university-based research and training in the social sciences and humanities.
Created by an act of Parliament in 1977, SSHRC is governed by a 22-member Council that reports to Parliament through the Minister of Industry.

SSHRC INSIGHT DEVELOPMENT GRANTS COMPETITION 2013
Deadline: February 1 The new Insight Development Grants support research in its initial stages. The grants enable the development of new research questions, as well as experimentation with new methods, theoretical approaches and/or ideas. Funding is provided for short-term research development projects, of up to two years, proposed by individuals or teams.Insight Development Grants foster research in its early stages, but are not intended to support large-scale initiatives. Long-term support for research is offered through SSHRC's Insight Grants. Funding is available to both emerging and established scholars for short-term research initiatives. Insight Development Grants research initiatives may be undertaken by an individual researcher or a team of researchers working in collaboration. The maximum value of an Insight Grant is $75,000 over one to two years. A minimum request of $7,000 is required in at least one of the years. Full program details are available on SSHRC's website. Note: Researchers cannot apply to both the Insight Development and Insight competitions in the same calendar year.

SSHRC Insight Development Grants Webinar - slides from the presentation on December 6, 2012 SSHRC INSIGHT GRANTS COMPETITION 2012
Deadline: October 15 The new Insight Grants program supports research excellence in the social sciences and humanities. Funding is available to both emerging and established scholars for long-term research initiatives. Insight Grants research initiatives may be undertaken by an individual researcher or a team of researchers working in collaboration. The maximum value of an Insight Grant is $500,000 over three to five years. A minimum request of $7,000 is required in at least one of the years. A maximum of $200,000 is available in a single year. The total budget for new awards in this competition is approximately $100 million disbursed over five years. This budget may be adjusted subject to the volume and quality of applications received in the competition. These, along with the size of the budgets requested and awarded, will determine the number of new grants awarded in spring 2013. Full program details are available on SSHRC's website.

SSHRC Application Development – Q&A Session
Tuesday September 25th, 12:00-2:00pm, Beatrice Watts Boardroom, Rm. IIC 2014, Bruneau Centre for Research and Innovation
For those preparing or planning to prepare a SSHRC Insight or Insight Development Grant Application this year, the Office of Research Services has organized an informal Q&A session with a panel of your colleagues with experience in serving on SSHRC Selection Committees, or who have insights on key aspects of successful applications. The session will provide prospective applicants with an opportunity to get expert insight on important points to consider in preparing your application.

Grants Crafting Consultant
Once again this year, Dr. Rosemary Ommer, a Grants Crafting Consultant will work in conjunction with Unit Grants Facilitators/Research Grants Officers. Dr. Ommer will provide extensive feedback on grant application content, focusing on idea development and marketing the application for SSHRC committees. She can be reached at ommer@uvic.ca
Connection Grants
Deadline: Continuous Intake
Connection Grants support events and outreach activities geared toward short-term, targeted knowledge mobilization initiatives. These events and activities represent opportunities to exchange knowledge and to engage on research issues of value to those participating. Events and outreach activities funded by a Connection Grant may often serve as a first step toward more comprehensive and longer-term projects potentially eligible for funding through other SSHRC funding opportunities.

Insight Development Grants
SSHRC continues implementation of its renewed program architecture with the launch of the Insight Development Grants funding opportunity. The description is now available on the SSHRC website. This funding opportunity offers grants in support of research in its initial stages. The grants enable the development of new research questions, as well as experimentation with new methods, theoretical approaches and/or ideas.
This new opportunity is open to both new and regular scholars who are affiliated with an eligible Canadian post-secondary institution. The deadline for submitting applications is February 1, 2013; the application form will be available in November 2012.
