Policies and Terms of Reference
The conduct of human research at Memorial University and its ethics review are guided by Memorial University's Policy on Ethics of Research Involving Human Participants, which is in compliance with Canada’s Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS2). All research projects involving human participants must receive approval from an ethics review board such as the ICEHR before the research begins.
The ICEHR operates in accordance with Memorial University’s Policy on Ethics of Research Involving Human Participants and normally follows the guidelines provided in the TCPS 2 in arriving at its ethics review decisions. The ethical principles guiding such decisions are:
- respect for human dignity and autonomy of the person through protecting privacy and confidentiality, and free and informed consent,
- respect for vulnerable persons,
- respect for justice and inclusiveness, and
- minimizing harm, maximizing benefit and balancing risks and benefits for research participants.
