NSERC Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) Program
NSERC CREATE Letter of Intent
Memorial has receive a quota of four (4) applications to the upcoming Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) Program. NSERC’s application deadline date for receipt of a Letter of Intent, and required forms and letters is May 1st, 2013. To facilitate the LOI process, there will be a two phase process for interested applicants from Memorial University:
Phase I – Registration - Deadline: Noon, Friday, March 15th
Documents to be submitted to the Office of Research Services include:
- List of names of the Principal Investigator and all internal co-applicants;
- Title of the Project;
- A 100 word description of the Project
Note: The information above will be used towards the establishment of an internal proposal review committee only.
Once applicants have submitted their registration to the ORS, they should also proceed with the completion of the Form 187 and Form 100 through the NSERC Online System for completion of Phase II of the internal application process.
Phase II – Submission of Complete LOI for Internal Review - Deadline: Noon, Friday, April 12th
Documents to be submitted to the Office of Research Services include:
- Department Head and Dean approvals (for all applicants/co-applicants);
- Form 187 – Letter of Intent to Apply for a CREATE Grant;
- Form 100 – Personal Data Form for the applicant
Following receipt of LOI's, applications will be reviewed by the committee established during Phase I and applicants will be selected for institutional endorsement from the Office of the Vice President (Research) for final submission to the NSERC LOI Competition.
NSERC's application deadline date for receipt of a complete Letter of Intent*, is May 1st, 2013. Following internal review and institutional endorsement from the Office of the Vice-President (Research), completed LOIs'* will be submitted to NSERC directly by the applicant.
*A complete Letter of Intent includes:
- A Letter of Intent for a CREATE Grant (Form 187) (see instructions on how to complete the Form 187);
- A Personal Data Form (Form 100) for the applicant;
- A letter from the applicant's university Vice-President, Research (for each application selected by the institution for LOI submission)
- For the industrial stream, a letter of e-mail from the collaborating industry(ies) to the applicant, confirming its (their) willingness to participate in the program committee and to host internships for trainees.

The CREATE program is highly selective, with pre-screening based on the Letter of Intent stage, where LOIs will be assessed equally in relation to the merit of the proposed training program and excellence of the team of researchers.
Sept. 22/13 is the date for full applications for those who are invited to apply.

New Opportunities:
Effective for the 2014 competition, the CREATE Program has partnered with a new international partner within the International Collaboration stream, La Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP).
Effective for the 2013 competition, the CREATE Program will offer two new opportunities within its current budget envelope: Industrial Stream and International Collaboration
PDF Eligibility:
Effective immediately (2012), please note that NSERC has removed the eligibility requirement for CREATE PDF trainees to be two or less years post completion of their Ph.D. degree to qualify for CREATE support. Please see the NSERC CREATE Award Holder's Guide that has been revised accordingly (page 16 - Postdoctoral level).
