CFI LOF Expressions of Interest

Expressions of Interest (EOIs):

The Office of Collaborations and Partnerships is accepting Expressions of Interest (EOI) for the October 15, 2013 Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) Leaders Opportunity Fund (LOF) competition. The following deadlines apply to this competition:

February 25, 2013: Internal deadline for submission of Expression of Interest (EOI) to the Office of Collaborations and Partnerships (OCP).

September 30, 2013: Internal deadline for submission of CFI applications to OCP for administrative review.

October 15, 2013: CFI deadline for submission of LOF applications.

Eligible applicants must be recognized leaders in their field of research or show promise of becoming research leaders. They must be engaged in, or embarking on, an innovative research program for which the infrastructure is essential and which will provide an enriched training environment.

Note to Canada Research Chairs: Canada Research Chair nominations or renewal applicants submitting applications for the April 2013 or October 2013 deadlines, who plan to include a CFI infrastructure request as part of their Chair application, must submit an EOI for the February 25, 2013 deadline.

Expressions of Interest (EOIs):

EOIs must be received by the Office of Collaborations and Partnerships no later than 4:00 pm on February 25, 2013. These should be no more than 3-4 pages in length, excluding CVs, and include the following information:

  • A general description of the infrastructure being requested and where it will be located;
  • Need for the Infrastructure, including what research or technology development it will enable and why this is important (e.g., institutionally, regionally, nationally, internationally, where applicable) ;
  • Fit with Memorial University's current Strategic Research Plan;
  • A project budget, including the CFI request and potential leverage/match funding sources (e.g., RDC, vendor in-kind contributions, other sources of match funding);
  • CVs for each researcher included on the application must also be provided.
  • A completed EOI Approval form (attached).

Please note that any additional information beyond that requested above will not be considered as part of the EOI process.

EOIs will be assessed by an internal Advisory Committee, appointed by the Vice-President (Research). This assessment process will be completed by March 15, 2013. Only those EOIs selected by the Advisory Committee will be eligible to apply to the CFI-LOF program. All applicants will be notified in writing of the EOI results.

CFI-LOF Applications:

Given Memorial's limited institutional allocation under the LOF program, each CFI-LOF application will be limited to a maximum CFI request of $100K, or 40% of the total project cost (whichever amount is lower), regardless of the number of applicants.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact OCP before the September 30th deadline for assistance in completing the CFI-LOF application.

If you have any questions about this opportunity, please do not hesitate to contact Joy Carew (joybest@mun.ca) or Pamela White (pwhite@mun.ca) in OCP before the February 25th deadline.
