Jenna Blakey - Education

Jenna Blakey

"I am from Red Deer, Alberta. I completed a Bachelor of Arts with Distinction from the Faculté Saint-Jean in Edmonton, Alberta (the French campus of the University of Alberta). My major was history and my minor was music.

"I am enrolled in the Master of Education (Post-Secondary Studies) program with a specialization in student services. I am currently working on role of the body in online learning. I decided to pursue graduate studies to gain formal training in student services to complement my work experience in the field.

"Memorial University is the only Canadian university offering a Masters degree with a specialization in student services. Studying at Memorial has the advantages of a smaller university, including contact with faculty, small class sizes and individualized attention. Being able to participate in programs like the Graduate Program in Teaching and the Aldrich Interdisciplinary Conference was an enjoyable experience that allowed me to work with faculty members and students to improve my skills and share ideas. Working on campus at the Writing Centre and as a research assistant within the Faculty of Education has allowed me to develop new skills and gain work experience.

"I have had the opportunity to work with some very supportive faculty members who are committed to the success of graduate students. As professors, supervisors and advisors, they have provided an encouraging and challenging environment for my studies and for my professional and academic pursuits.

"Moving to St. John's has allowed me to appreciate the beauty of this province. The people of Newfoundland and Labrador living in this province, and across the country, were helpful in providing information about their home and making me feel welcome and a part of their community.

"I have been involved in volunteer work on campus with both the GSU (Board of Directors and Academic Committee) and the Faculty of Education (Committee on Graduate Studies and Faculty Council). I also work on campus as a graduate tutor at the Writing Centre. I was a member of the MUN Ballroom and Latin Dance Club, and I am a member of Memorial Toastmasters. My other interests include pottery, music, reading, yoga, dancing and outdoors activities.

"I plan to return to Alberta to find work in the field of student services. I hope to find a position that combines my skills, my academic training and my interests in online learning and student development. In the future, I may consider pursuing further academic studies in my field.

Last spring Jenna was the recipient of the Dr. Austin J. Harte Memorial Graduate Scholarship
