This year's report will introduce you to some of the outstanding people behind the research being carried out at Memorial University. It will provide a glimpse of the diverse range of research ideas being explored and highlights the progress we have made towards our research targets, and our contributions to the community.

This year, external funding in support of research at Memorial University totalled more than $48 million. This is a 12 per cent increase over the previous year, and we expect that trend to continue. Memorial also saw its allocation of Canada Research Chairs increase from 22 to 25 as a result of our growth in research funding. These additional Canada Research Chairs will be allocated next year.

The prospects for continued growth in research at Memorial University have never looked better. The recent establishment of a permanent fund for the indirect costs of research by the Government of Canada, and the Industrial Research and Innovation Fund by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador represent important new commitments in support of research.

We hope that this year's report provides a human perspective on some of the more notable research events and findings of the year.
