Daryl Attwood

Daryl Attwood was born in St. John’s, Canada and entered the School of Engineering (Mechanical) at Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN). Following graduation in 1982, he joined Shell Canada in Calgary as an operations engineer.

Starting in 1984, Daryl spent three years in research. While pursuing a masters degree at Memorial, he held teaching positions at Memorial (thermodynamics), The University of Calgary (linear algebra), and Mount Royal College (Calgary, linear algebra), and research engineer positions at The Centre for Cold Ocean Resources Engineering in St John’s (iceberg motion) and McMaster University in Hamilton (machine tool dynamics). Daryl completed his masters’ studies in 1987 and was awarded an M.Eng. in Ocean Engineering. His thesis title was Wave induced motion of small ice masses.

Daryl joined Det norske Veritas (Calgary) in 1988 where his experience in iceberg motion was used in several joint industry projects, mainly assessing the risk of iceberg damage to offshore structures. In 1991 he joined Lloyd’s Register. His LR career has included postings in St John’s, Halifax, Rotterdam, London, and his present location in Aberdeen, Scotland. He has served as a surveyor and project manager on the Cohasset Panuke, Hibernia, Terra Nova, Sable, and Deep Panuke oil and gas projects. He completed the LR internal MBA program in 1999, and his business development assignments have been in the Naval Ships (London) and Oil and Gas (Aberdeen) businesses.

Since 2003, Daryl has been a part time PhD student at Memorial in Risk and Reliability engineering under the supervision of Drs. Faisal Khan and Brian Veitch. His thesis title is “A reliability approach to the quantification of occupational accidents in the offshore oil and gas industry”.

Daryl lives with his wife, Connie, and children Julia (16) and Ethan (12) in the small town of Stonehaven, fifteen miles south of Aberdeen. His leisure time is spent “running around the countryside”, keeping up with the fortunes of the Montreal Canadiens and the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the occasional game of softball.
