Christina Adams, Masters candidate in Women’s Studies comes to Memorial from Airdrie, Alberta. “I am working on a film which explores ways that girls construct, reproduce and challenge identity in a media saturated world. My interest areas include media education, gender theory, communication theory, new media, and video/film production,” she said. Christina did her undergraduate degree in Fine Arts - Photography at the University of Calgary.
“I was working professionally for 3 years and was unsatisfied with my career path. I was working as a multimedia art director and felt that my work was meaningless. I decided that I wanted to do something that would positively affect people's lives.”
“I chose Memorial because the Women's Studies Program offered a project option which would allow me to be creative with my thesis work. Having friends in Newfoundland made it a good choice and the low tuition was a big draw, as well.”
I recently created a short documentary about a band called the Kremlin who perform "serf" rock set to a socialist theme. This short was screened at a benefit I co-hosted to raise money for Iris Kirby House. The evening began with performers, poetry readings and screenings from the International Women's Film Festival and then ended with a performance by the latest incarnation of the Kremlin Dance Party of Canada: The Proletariat Marching Band.”
Christina has been accepted to present at the Feminist Research Group Conference in Windsor, Ontario at the beginning of May as well as at the Canadian Association for the Study of Women and Education Conference at York University in Toronto.
After completing her degree at Memorial, Christina will be heading to Trois-Riviere for a French Immersion program and then hopes to work with public broadcasting and continue making documentaries.
