Memorial strives to develop a health and safety culture with special emphasis on the prevention of injuries, illnesses and violence in the workplace. Memorial University is committed to:
To state the University’s commitment to health and safety as defined in the Health and Safety Management System.
All workplaces that are owned or operated by the University and all Members of the University Community.
Separately Incorporated Entities (SIEs) have their own governing bodies and are therefore considered to be employers under occupational health and safety legislation. SIEs are responsible for their own policy or program. This means that SIEs with 10 or more workers require a health and safety program and those with fewer than 10 workers require a policy. SIEs shall maintain legislative compliance by either adopting Memorial’s Health and Safety Program or by developing their own policy or program.
Contractor - A person, partnership, or corporation bound under a contract to execute work on behalf of the University or at a University facility.
Health and Safety Management System - A system used to control, document, plan and measure the performance of a health and safety program that is defined in Section 12 of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations
Member of the University Community - Any person who teaches, studies, conducts research, or other Worker at the University or any other person while they are acting on behalf of or at the request of or visiting the University.
Supervisor – A person authorized or designated by Memorial University to exercise direction and control over workers.
Worker – Any person engaged in an occupation with either the University or Contractor.
Workplace - a place where a Worker or self-employed person is engaged in an occupation and includes a vehicle or mobile equipment used by a worker in an occupation.
Memorial University strives to provide an incident and accident free environment. The University believes that health and safety is a shared responsibility but recognizes that the Employer is ultimately responsible for the health and safety of all Members of the University Community.
The President ensures that a Health and Safety Management System is documented, implemented and maintained.
All Members of the University Community have an individual responsibility to integrate health and safety practices into their daily activities. Members of the University Community are also required to take reasonable care to protect their own health and safety and that of other persons at or near the workplace.
Every Supervisor is responsible for fulfilling the requirements of the University's Health and Safety Management System. They are also responsible for taking every reasonable precaution to protect and promote the health and safety of those workers under their supervision.
Functional oversight of the health and safety performance of Separately Incorporated Entities is a responsibility of the Vice-Presidents’ Council.
Memorial University cooperates with established health and safety committees, Contractors, and Members of the University Community to ensure that the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the University's Health and Safety Management System are fully implemented and integrated into all University work, study, and research activities.
