Administrative Leave for Academic Administrators |

Purpose:This policy governs the granting of periods of leave to academic administrators. The purpose of the leave is for academic renewal and for full re-entry to the non-administrative aspects of academic life (teaching and research) at the conclusion of their term. |

Definitions:Administrative Leave - a period of leave at full salary (or at 95% of full pay plus a research grant equal to 5% of salary). | ||||||||||||||||
Policy:I. Conditions Administrative leave will only be granted where the expectation is that the administrator will return to the University for a period of time equal to the length of the leave. No administrative stipend will be paid to an academic administrator on leave. II. Eligibility The granting of administrative leave will be limited to those academic administrators holding the position of Department Head, Division Head at Grenfell Campus, Discipline Chair in the Faculty of Medicine, Director of the Ocean Sciences Centre, Dean, Vice-Dean, Assistant Dean, Associate Dean, or, University Librarian, Associate University Librarian, and Associate Vice-President who meet one of the following criteria:
In such cases, the academic administrator shall be eligible for administrative leaves of up to twelve (12) months after serving the initial five year term and a further administrative leave of up to eighteen (18) months after completing a second five year term subject to a total maximum entitlement of twenty-four (24) months. Time spent on administrative leave shall not be considered as service towards the administrative term. Administrative leave shall also be granted to administrators from within the Division of Cooperative Education who meet one of the following criteria:
III. Carryover of Eligibility The University recognizes that prospective academic administrators who are currently employed at Memorial may have accrued years of service toward a sabbatical. Such years may be carried forward when the administrator re-enters the bargaining unit according to the MUNFA Collective Agreement. IV. Relationship to Sabbatical Leave Where an academic administrator has not served enough time in an administrative position to qualify for administrative leave, the years of service as an academic administrator may be considered eligible service towards sabbatical leave. Accrual of years towards a sabbatical leave following administrative leave begins with the first year of normal academic duties following return from the administrative leave. V. Designating a Portion of Salary as Research Grant A person applying for administrative leave is also eligible to apply for a research grant of up to 5% of basic annual salary prorated for the length of the leave provided the total does not exceed 100% of salary. In addition, a person on leave for any length of time at full or at reduced salary may apply through the Office of Research to have a portion of basic annual salary (prorated for the length of the leave) designated as a research grant in accordance with the Universitys policies and subject to Revenue Canada rules. | ||||||||||||||||
