More about Marilyn Beaton
Marilyn has been teaching at the School of Nursing for 37 years.
She has taught various courses but since the 1990s has consistently
taught distance courses in the BN (Post RN) program. As well, over
the years she has had temporary and permanent positions in
administration.
Marilyn has, with Jeanette Walsh, written a book on the history of
nursing in Newfoundland and Labrador and together they have written
a second book with Marilyn Marsh who interviewed nurses in the
1980s but was unable to publish her research. Marilyn and Jeanette
have submitted a third book for publication using the oral
histories of nurses who came from outside the country to the
province and stayed to make it their home. From 2005-2008 she and
Jeanette were the co-editors of the newsletter for the Canadian
Association for the History of Nursing/Association canadienne pour
l’histoire du nursing. In addition, they have attended many
conferences on the history of nursing.
Marilyn has been active in the life of the school. She has been
involved with planning the celebrations of the 25 year and 40 year
anniversaries of the school and helped form the School of Nursing
Alumni Group which, after several years became inactive, much to
her disappointment. She has been more successful as the faculty
liaison to the retired faculty group by sending a bimonthly
newsletter and organizing and attending bimonthly potluck events at
retirees’ homes.
