Rendell
Mercer, a native of
Upper Island Cove, has been playing fiddle since he was fourteen
years old. He spent many years playing in the TWYLITE BAND where he
honed his skills on bass, rhythm-guitar and vocals, but never lost
his love for the fiddle and traditional music. Upon retirement from
the Newfoundland school system he returned to his fiddling in
earnest, mentoring young fiddlers and playing regularly throughout
the province. Rendell has been at the centre of a revival of
fiddling amongst young people of the area. He has been responsible
for inspiring hundreds of new and old fiddlers and currently
conducts the youth fiddling group, THE BACCALIEU
FIDDLERS.
