Opportunities to Sing and Play at MUN
Just because you’ve left another life behind
doesn’t mean you have to stop singing or playing. We have
lots of non-music students in our ensembles in the School of Music.
Staff and faculty are welcome too. Join us and be a part of MUSIC
AT MUN!
CONCERT BAND
The All-Campus Band is open to all MUN students wishing to continue in music-making throughout their university years. The band is open to all students regardless of major. (Membership is also extended to all MUN graduate students, faculty and staff). Without demanding a significant obligation in a student's schedule, the Concert Band members meet once a week (Mondays nights) and perform a formal concert at the end of each semester. No audition is needed to join the Concert Band.
The Concert Band is primarily conducted by Dr. Denise Grant but also features several conductors throughout the year, all of whom are enrolled in the MM Conducting degree at MUN.
FESTIVAL CHOIR
The MUN Festival Choir is a choir of about 100 singers and is open to all MUN students regardless of their degree program. Staff and faculty members are also welcome to participate in this group. If you have always loved singing in a choir during your days in high school, join us and keep on singing! The Festival Choir meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at noon, and performs a major concert at the end of each semester.. There is no audition to belong, just a simple range check to be sure you get into the right section.
Range checks will begin at the first rehearsal, Wednesday
September 9 at noon in the Choral Room. Sing for the joy of it or
investigate taking the course as a credit.
See you there!
Festival Choir is conducted by Douglas Dunsmore, ably assisted by students in the MMUS conducting program.
Ready to notch up your performance level? Consider trying out for one of our auditioned ensembles...
WIND ENSEMBLE
Dr. Denise Grant, conductor
The wind ensemble is the School of Music’s primary ensemble for wind and percussion majors and is dedicated to performing the finest and most challenging wind repertoire. A core group is often taken from the membership of the band to form various chamber winds groups, including a standard wind ensemble (one on a part), to expose students to significant works in several mediums and musical eras.
Although most members are music majors, the ensemble includes a number of undergraduate and graduate students from other disciplines. The Wind Ensemble performs four concerts each year with additional tours and outreach programs.
CHAMBER CHOIR
Dr. Douglas Dunsmore, conductor

The MUN Chamber Choir is an award winning auditioned group that performs regularly on campus, around St.John’s and occasionally much further afield. If you enjoy singing choral music at a very high level, this choir could be for you. All MUN students and faculty are welcome to audition. The choir usually performs major roles in three concerts yearly, plus numerous other appearances, often culminating in a tour.
Chamber Choir is conducted by Douglas Dunsmore with assistance from the students in the M Mus Choral Conducting program.
JAZZ ENSEMBLE
Bill Brennan, director

The MUN Jazz Ensemble is a big band formation (trumpets, trombones, saxophones and rhythm) section that explores the whole range of jazz styles from swing and Latin to bebop and modern jazz. Keep your chops up with this very hot ensemble under the direction of St. John’s jazz guru, Bill Brennan.
The MUN Jazz Ensemble performs two concerts a year with the odd bit of gigging around thrown in!
CHAMBER ORCHESTRA
Dr. Vernon Regehr, conductor

The Chamber Orchestra provides its members with the opportunity to study and perform a wide range of standard and contemporary orchestra repertoire and features a solo concerto performance with the orchestra by the winner of the annual student concerto competition. String players, in particular, are encouraged to audition! The Chamber Orchestra performs two to three concerts on campus each year.
