Conducting, Adjunct Professor

Marc DavidMarc David is in his 11th year as Principal Conductor of the Newfoundland Symphony, and holds the position of Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of l'Orchestre Symphonique de la Montérégie (Longueuil, Quebec) since 1994. He has also recently been invited to serve as adjunct professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland.

As guest conductor, he has worked with orchestras across Canada, the United States, Mexico and Switzerland. Recent engagements include concerts with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, the National Arts Centre Orchestra (Ottawa), the Edmonton Symphony, the Winnipeg Symphony, Orchestra London, the Fribourg Youth Orchestra (Switzerland), the Carlos Chavez Symphony Orchestra (Mexico City), the Bangor Symphony (Maine), and the Longy Orchestra (Boston). Upcoming guest appearances will include concerts with the Windsor Symphony (ON) and the Okanagan Valley Symphony Orchestra (BC).

Other activities involve jury work for various competitions and festivals such as the Canadian Music Competition, Prix d’Europe and MusicFest Canada, as well as sitting on the Boards of Directors of Orchestras Canada and the Conseil québécois de la musique. As of June 2002, he also chairs the Quebec Region Board of the Canadian Music Centre.

Marc David obtained his Bachelor of Music at McGill University in 1983. He has since continued his studies in orchestral conducting at Hartford University (Connecticut) and at l'Université de Montréal where he completed a doctoral degree (new music conducting). He also studied at the Aspen Music Festival and the Pierre Monteux School (Hancock, Maine), where he was Maestro Charles Bruck's assistant.

He received the Heinz Unger Conduting Award in 1984 and holds grants in orchestral conducting from The Canada Council, The Quebec Ministry of Cultural Affairs and l'Université de Montréal.
