TEACHERS AND INFLUENCES

MY FLUTE FAMILY TREE

Every musician is profoundly influenced by the teachers who touch his or her life. I am grateful to all the wonderful musicians who have patiently given me so much of their wisdom, and very proud to be the “flute grandchild” or “great-grandchild” of so many incredible flutists! When I teach I like to share with students the origin of many of the ideas am passing on.

The flutists who appear in the first column, my flute “parents,” are teachers with whom I worked regularly in the course of my degrees at the University of British Columbia , Indiana University and Rice University. Of course, numerous other wonderful artists such as Trevor Wye, Jeanne Baxtresser, Carol Wincenc and Samuel Baron have touched my life at summer festivals, but this page is too small to include such a complete family tree.

Through my flute “great-grandparents” I trace my training back through Barrère, Gaubert, Le Roy, Taffanel...all the way to Blavet!
