Message from the Dean
Memorial University is a wonderful place to become the musician you are meant to be. Here’s five great reasons why:
An Internationally Respected Faculty: Music is a real-world profession, which is why our faculty regularly perform and present their musical creations and scholarship far beyond the walls of the School of Music, across Canada and the world. Faculty talents have been recognized by many awards and prizes: from JUNO and ECMA nominations and awards, to the Trudeau Foundation, and the Association of Atlantic Universities Teaching Award. Most important for you, they bring this wealth of experience right back to the studio and classroom.
An Energized Student Community: Music is a 24/7 lifestyle, so it’s very important to know that you’ll be working in a supportive community of talented, smart, and music-obsessed fellow students. We’re large enough to offer a full range of programs and attract excellent students, but we’re small enough for you to get lots of individual attention and performance opportunities. Join the Student Music Society, which hosts an annual scholarship fund-raising Gala; or take the initiative: last year, a small group of students organized Christmas Caroling for charity and raised thousands of dollars.
A Supportive Environment: Memorial University is famous for its highly government subsidized tuition. Compare and you’ll see that it’s the equivalent of having a significant scholarship every year - for every student. In addition to Memorial’s generous entrance scholarships for high achieving students, the School of Music enjoys wonderful support from the community that allows us to provide many entrance and ongoing scholarships in music. With over 30,000 visitors through the building a year, we have plenty of jobs for Music Student Assistants who work in box office, stage management and sound and lighting tech.
A Topnotch Facility: Musical training is intense and our hard working students enjoy the benefits of a well-equipped musical ‘home’. The M.O. Morgan building boasts two beautiful concert halls, a brand new electronic music lab, and practice rooms with windows. Study at the Music Resource Centre where you’ll have direct access to our Music Librarian, and relax in our comfortable Student Lounge.
An Incredibly Musical City: St. John’s is a thriving port city that hums with musical activity from orchestras to operas, musicals to choral societies, brass bands to indie bands, traditional and popular music to diverse world traditions. There are countless opportunities to participate in community music and professional development, from performing with the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra to playing at a session downtown. Our own Music at Memorial concert series brings great concerts and master classes your way every week during term!
