The Sustainability Office, in
conjunction with student volunteers and in particular MUN Project
Green, will be holding an "Idle Free" campaign from 12-2pm in front
of the Eduction and Arts buildings.
During this event students will be approaching vehicles, whether
they are idling their engines or not, and letting them know they
are in an Idle Free Zone. The students will also be handing out a
small information leaflet that outlines the economic and
environmental benefit to not idling car engines.
Everyone will benefit from not unnecessarily idling vehicles - the
air/ozone/environment, people with breating difficulties or those
at greater risk of developing lung problems, and the pocketbooks of
the people driving the cars!

In the Faculty of Education, there
are plans for a food drive, collection of clothing for the
women’s shelter, and as a random act of kindness, we will be
distributing a limited number of Chartwell’s dollars (of a $2
value; enough for a cup of coffee) to students in the hallways in
between classes. For faculty and staff there will be a coffee break
in the Dean’s Office sometime during the day. As well, we
will have a cake for students, faculty and staff, bearing the image
and name of our ‘Kindness Mascot’. On our posters
leading up to the 26th, we are advertising a contest to ‘name
our Kind Face’ (which is a variation on the classic happy
face). Contestants will click on a link (also the image of our Kind
Face), and add their contact details as well as their submission.
The winner receives a prize.
The people who will benefit are any recipients of the food and
clothing bank items, as well as the peopl! e who populate the G.H.
Hickman building, which will be filled with the aura of kindness
throughout the day! Anyone who partakes in the activities and
contest will also benefit. With cake, what can go wrong?!

EWB has a Fair Trade Coffee Club that operates every
Monday to Friday, 8:15 to 11am. We always have fair trade coffee,
teas and hot chocolate available. During Kindness Friday everything
will be complimentary! Swing by EN-4000 (first left off the
elevators) and hang out for a while in a comfortable atmosphere
while enjoying some free coffee/tea/hot chocolate.
The best thing about this is that they are all fair trade products
(even the sugar) so the farmers producing the goods are receiving a
fair wage for their labours and will be able to afford to take
steps that will help bring themselves, their families and their
communities out of poverty! Literally everybody involved will
benefit from this simple act of drinking coffee!

Marketing & Communications has developed a project for Kindness Friday that both supports the campus food bank and United Way. Called United Weigh, the concept involves the staff in MarComm -- plus Human Resources, Alumni Affairs and Development and possibly other advancement units -- collecting food items for the food bank and then for one or more corporate sponsors to match the weight of the food in dollars ($1 per kg, to a maximum of $500 per company) in support of United Way’s Community Fund. Already The Telegram has agreed to help ‘balance our load ’; more info on other sponsors who sign up will be forthcoming. Stay tuned!
