History of Mundays

Background
Originally created by Memorial University’s Anniversaries Committee as Festival of Anniversaries in 1999 and 2000, MUNdays has grown into an event involving students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Since its beginnings, the vision was to establish a recognized, distinguished and prestigious event of the university. Between 2001 and 2004, the event was called Celebrate Memorial and the theme was “Connecting to Community”. Activities were focused on bringing the surrounding community and Memorial University closer together.
In 2005, Celebrate Memorial adopted a new identity. Rebranded as “I ♥MUNdays” on the St. John’s Campus and “I Fell for Grenfell” on the Corner Brook Campus, the festival of events took an internal focus to directly target students, faculty and staff and the public were secondary audiences or not targeted at all.Goals of the event no longer included public celebration, but instead focused on building on-campus spirit, school pride, and student & staff participation and leadership. The transformation of Celebrate Memorial into MUNdays succeeded immensely in generating greater student awareness and participation, as well as more Memorial community spirit.
