In response to receiving generous donations from some passengers, Memorial University has established the September 11, 2001, International Travel Bursary Fund which will assist students from other countries to travel to Memorial University for studies. The university intends that this bursary will be a perpetual memorial to those who died in the tragic events of that day, while it also fosters international relations. By re-activating an unused campus building, the Thomson Centre, Memorial University was able to offer temporary accommodations for approximately 475 passengers who were forced to make an unscheduled stopover in Newfoundland as a result of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States. The university made every effort to offer these passengers basic services at the Thomson Centre or in other campus buildings nearby. A Help Centre was set up to assist travellers with any accommodation difficulties. Other services offered to them included: washrooms, showers, meals (at the university's residence dining hall), child care services, phone, fax and Internet communications and access to televisions and help for those with special needs.
