Katz Report

Investigation into the employment experience of Dr. Deepa Khosla and related matters:

In January 2006, Dr. Axel Meisen, president of Memorial University, announced that he would launch an investigation into the employment experience and the late Dr. Deepa Khosla and related matters. The full text of Dr. Meisen’s announcement is available at online.

Dr. Deepa Khosla, a political scientist, who joined Memorial University in August 2005 as an assistant professor, passed away from natural causes (a brain hemorrhage caused by an aneurysm) on Nov. 21, 2005.

Subsequent to her death, members of Dr. Khosla's family and fellow scholars from outside Memorial University alleged that Dr. Khosla felt a lack of support for her safety and an unwelcoming environment for women at Memorial University.

The president committed the university to an independent investigation of the matter and indicated that the results of the investigation would be made public, except for those aspects that the investigator concluded were necessary to withhold in order to protect privacy.

Dr. Meisen appointed Dr. Shirley Katz, an associate professor at York University with specific expertise in this area, to conduct the investigation. Read the investigation’s terms of reference here.

The results of the investigation were received by Dr. Meisen on Aug. 15, 2006.

A briefing on the findings of Dr. Katz was presented by Dr. Meisen to an open meeting of the university community on Sept. 13, 2006. The briefing was video taped in its entirety. To view the video, click here.

Details of the briefing, including Dr. Katz’s findings and recommendations have been posted online.

Dr. Meisen appointed Action Groups to follow-up on the recommendations in the Katz Report.

In October, the university appointed Brian Bowman, an independent expert and lawyer from Winnipeg, to review Dr. Katz’s report for the purposed of redacting (i.e. severing) information that must be protected under privacy law.

The redacted report was received by the university in early November and Dr. Meisen scheduled a meeting of the university community on Nov. 9 to release the report and outline follow-up on actions taken on the recommendations.

On Nov. 9, Dr. Meisen met with the university community to release the redacted report. That briefing was video taped in its entirety. To view the video click here.
