Thesis Title

Local Identity and Accommodation Strategy in a Tourist Dependent Community

Thesis Description

I am proposing to examine how members of a speech community that depends on an external source of income, such as tourism, use local language to index identity against their use of non-local language to accommodate summer visitors and to ameliorate socioeconomic pressures.  I will look at how life-long residents of my home community, Mount Desert Island, which sees over 2.5 million tourists every year, use local and non-local language phonology.
