Certificate in Library Studies
The Certificate Program in Library Studies is for persons who wish to be more accomplished providers of library services. The program will benefit personnel in school, public, university, medical, legal and special interest libraries.
You will learn how to cope with the complex demands of your position and to be more effectual in your tasks, leading to a more rewarding personal and professional experience.
As a graduate of the program, you will bring to your work:
• a comprehensive understanding of libraries; their purpose and function,
• an awareness of the range of library materials available to users,
• more effective communication skills,
• techniques for dealing constructively with the public,
• the ability to plan events and organize your activities,
• an appreciation for the importance of maintaining a broad knowledge of the sciences and humanities in meeting information requests from library users, and
• the core skills needed to meet the complex demands of library work in the "information age", including skills and knowledge related to the use of computers, multimedia and the Internet.
Program Requirements
To be eligible for the Certificate in Library Studies, you must complete 30 credit hours per the following requirements:

Library Studies 1605 - Children's Services
Library Studies 1610 - Library Services for Business and Industry
Library Studies 1611 - Multimedia Operations in the Library Setting
Library Studies 2606 - Advanced Topics in Library Technology

Library Studies 3600 -Directed Research/Project
Prerequisite(s): Any two Library Studies courses below the 3000 level.
Library Studies 3601-9 - Special Topics in Library Studies

| Individuals who have completed Memorial’s Certificate Program in Library Studies may transfer a maximum of six courses from that program towards NSCC’s Library and Information Technology diploma program. For more information, please visit NSCC’s program Web site. |

1. With respect to electives, you may, in certain cases, apply a substitute course that has relevance to your area of speciality and the field of library studies. Please submit your request for a substitution, in writing, to:

2. Certificate courses are specifically developed for certificate programs and as such may not be applied towards the satisfaction of requirements for any other diploma or degree program.
3. Prior to registration, Provincial Public Libraries Board employees should contact their department about program requirements.
4. Certificate program requirements are governed by all applicable academic regulations of Memorial University of Newfoundland.
5. No candidate may be awarded a certificate until he or she has obtained an average of two points or better on the total number of credit hours required for the certificate.
Degree credit and certificate credit courses used towards affiliate and certificate program requirements, may be offered variously on-campus day and evenings as well via distance delivery.
