The killick

The killick

Early Newfoundland and Labrador sailors used a simple technological device crafted from local materials of wood and stone to anchor their boats when they traveled and worked in local waters. This anchor, known as a "Killick" served them well for centuries. Though no longer in practical use it still symbolizes the ingenuity and determination of a people to capitalize on local knowledge and resources. As we chart new directions for teaching and learning through a sea of information and communications technologies, we reach back to an earlier technology to keep us grounded. The name "Killick" suggests adaptability to this new environment and inspires innovation in our approach to new opportunities. We launch forth on solid educational research developed in cooperation with our community partners. The Killick symbolizes the strength and determination of our alliance.
