The Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER), Memorial University of Newfoundland, may devote funds to current issues associated with our mandate. When not conducting fieldwork, researchers will be based at Memorial University.
Examples of potential research topics might include, but are not limited to:
a. the relocation of the Innu from Davis Inlet to Sango Bay;
b. the effects of education reform on Newfoundland and Labrador;
c. the depopulation of Newfoundland and Labrador;
d. topics related to the crisis in the fishery.
Researchers are free to propose additional topics for strategic funding from ISER. Projects partially funded by other agencies are strongly encouraged.
Applications will be assessed by the ISER Awards Panel and will be judged on the basis of relevance of the topic and quality of the application. Since ISER research funds are limited and awards are made on a highly competitive basis, strategic grants, and any other award, may not be offered in any particular year.
Strategic grant applications may include other ISER award categories, for example, master, doctoral and post-doctoral fellowships, faculty relief from teaching, and research funds. Applications should identify the types and amounts of support required and the individuals who will receive this support.
It is expected that a book-length manuscript will be produced as a result of strategic research. ISER Books will have the right of first refusal on such manuscripts.
The annual deadline date for applications is February 15.
