Teaching Opportunities - Spring 2013

Subject to sufficient enrolment and budgetary restrictions, the Faculty of Arts may appoint several Per Course Instructors to teach courses in Police Studies in the Spring 2013 semester. To apply for these positions, please complete the Faculty of Arts Per-Course Teaching Application form available on line on the faculty Website. In addition to this application form, people on the LUMUN Seniority List are responsible for ensuring that an up to date C.V. and teaching dossier are on file in the Dean of Arts office. Along with the completed application form, applicants not on the LUMUN Seniority List are asked to provide a letter of application, their C.V., teaching dossier, if applicable, and the names and contact information of two references. Applications should be submitted electronically (arts@mun.ca) or in hard copy to the Associate Dean of Arts (Undergraduate) in care of Ms. Elizabeth Foley by Friday, March 15, 2013. All required information must be received before applications will be considered; applicants are responsible for ensuring that their application files are complete.

 Police Studies 2000: An Introduction to Policing in Canada

This will be a web-based section of PLST 2000 offered by distance education.

PLST 2000 will examine the organization of policing, its mandate and operation. It will provide an overview of the history and development of policing in Canada; examples from Newfoundland and Labrador will be used where appropriate. It will discuss the various roles and responsibilities of the police in society. It will explore the issue of police decision-making, the exercise of police powers, and the use of discretion by police officers. Several other issues relating to policing will be discussed, including police recruitment and training, the professional role of the police, stress on the job and policing in a diverse society.

A Master’s degree in Police Studies (or a related discipline) is required, along with demonstrated knowledge of the course content and relevant police-related work experience. Experience or training in teaching in police-related fields and in distance education is preferred.

 Police Studies 2200: An Introduction to Corrections

This will be a web-based section of PLST 2200 offered by distance education. PLST 2200 will introduce students to the Corrections System in Canada and its role in the Canadian Criminal Justice system. Topics covered in this course will include: the evolution of punishment and corrections in Canada; the purpose of prison; the classification of inmates; the inmate subculture; violence inside prisons; use of force by correctional officers; criminal offence cycles; and the impact of imprisonment on individuals.

A Master’s degree in Police Studies (or a related discipline) is required, along with demonstrated knowledge of the course content and relevant police-related work experience. Experience or training in teaching in police-related fields and in distance education is preferred.
