Faculty of Arts - Police Studies (Spring semester 2012)

Subject to sufficient enrolment and budgetary restrictions, the Faculty of Arts may appoint a Per Course Instructor to teach a course in Police Studies in the Spring 2012 semester. Letters of application, along with a curriculum vitæ, a teaching dossier and the names and contact information of three referees should be submitted to the Program Coordinator, Police Studies Major program, by Friday, April 6, 2012. All required information must be received before applications will be considered; applicants are responsible for ensuring that their application files are complete. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply. However, priority will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada. Police Studies 2000: An Introduction to Policing in Canada

This will be a web-based section of PLST 2000 offered by distance education. PLST 2000 will examine the organization of policing, its mandate and operation. It will provide an overview of the history and development of policing in Canada; examples from Newfoundland and Labrador will be used where appropriate. It will discuss the various roles and responsibilities of the police in society. It will explore the issue of police decision-making, the exercise of police powers, and the use of discretion by police officers. Several other issues relating to policing will be discussed, including police recruitment and training, the professional role of the police, stress on the job and policing in a diverse society. A Master’s degree in Police Studies (or a related discipline) is required, along with demonstrated knowledge of the course content and relevant police-related work experience. Experience or training in teaching in police-related fields and in distance education is preferred.
