Hydrostatic Weighing

Hydrostatic weighing, or underwater weighing, is considered the most valid and reliable method for determining body composition, or more specifically a person's percent body fat (% BF). This test is based on the fact that the more lean muscle mass a person has, the denser they will be in water. The higher the density of a person, the lower their % BF. Differences in gender, race, age, and training status are taken into consideration when evaluating % BF using the hydrostatic weighing calculation method. This test is useful in tracking changes in body composition before, during, and following a change of lifestyle.

Hydrostatic weighing provides the following useful information:

Calculated % body fat within 2-4 percent error Comparison to age matched normative data Breakdown of body weight into two components: fat mass and fat-free (muscle) mass
