Firefighter Testing
Allied Health Services is pleased to provide VO2max testing to firefighter applicants.
A VO2max test measures maximal oxygen consumption and is used to assess an individual's aerobic fitness. It is viewed as one of the best physiological indicator of a person's capacity for maintaining endurance-type activity.
A VO2max test directly measures oxygen consumption through gas collection analysis. Other related physiological parameters such as heart rate are also monitored. The test is performed using a progressive, incremental exercise test to exhaustion on a treadmill. The speed of the treadmill is gradually increased until the individual reaches his or her maximum intensity. The minimal acceptable score on the VO2max test for firefighter applicants is 42.5 ml-1min-1kg-1 (relative oxygen consumption).
