My experience with the School of Human Kinetics andRecreation
My experience with the School of Human Kinetics and Recreation was awesome. I met a lot of great people and the professors were always there to help me with any problems or questions I had. While our classes were extremely small at times, it was an advantage because it allowed us to interact easily and have great discussions in class.
My work terms
My first work term was with The Works with Camp Watchamacallit as a camp counsellor for children aged 5-12. It was a great experience overall because I love to work with children. I was able to grow as an individual and it allowed me to improve my leadership skills. It also introduced me a lot of other great people in the physical education and kinesiology programs as well. My second and third work terms were with Recreation Newfoundland and Labrador. I was the Recreation Coordinator where I did a lot of administrative duties and was engaged in a variety of programs and services that they offered. I had the ability to create brochures and plan an event where we introduced a new website to people of this province. I also wrote a few articles for Recreation Newfoundland and Labradors Newsletter. This workterm was a great experience because I was able to meet a lot of people in the recreation field. All of the staff at Recreation Newfoundland and Labrador believed in my abilities as a professional and I couldn’t have asked for better people to work with! This work experience has allowed me to improve my communication skills and have increased my confidence levels extremely.
My experience with the co-op program, office and staff
Gail, Julie and Diane were great people to work with during my co-op degree program. They made me feel very comfortable each time I came to speak with them and welcomed me with a smile each time I came to see them. They pushed me to get out of my comfort zone and try new things, which allowed me to improve as a professional and an individual. They were always there to help if I had any questions about my work reports or any other issues about job placements. If not for this opportunity, I don’t think I would be in the excellent position that I am in today. THANK YOU!
While completing my final semester of my Recreation program, I was asked to work part-time with Recreation Newfoundland and Labrador as the Recreation Coordinator. Once I completed my degree, I was offered a full-time position with them and have been enjoying my time there ever since. I plan and implement a variety of programs to recreation directors/commissions and volunteer groups across the province, as well as providing strong administrative support to our office manager. I am also required to write reports and articles for the programs that I am involved with, as well as update our website with new information
