Community leaders in the Discovery Regional Development Zone: Would you like an opportunity to share your work, challenges and ideas with others? Would you like a chance to discover new opportunities for collaboration in your region?
Memorial faculty, staff and students: Would you like an opportunity to meet with community members in the Discovery Regional Development Zone, share your work (research, teaching or outreach) and help guide regional priorities for future Memorial collaboration?
If so, then consider attending this Regional Workshop on March 16, 2012!
It will be held from 8:30am-4:00pm at the Terra Nova Resort in Port Blandford.
The four major themes to be discussed are:
Tourism: How do we grow the tourism season? What is social enterprise and can this model play a role in tourism development? What are the needs of small-scale tourism sites? How does tourism in the region fit into the province as a whole?
Changing Demographics and Shifting Needs: As the population ages and rural communities shrink, how do we continue to provide public services, especially to seniors? What are the effects of an aging population?
Labour Market Issues: How do transient workers affect the region? What are the possibilities for local, national and international immigrants joining the workforce?
Ocean Based Wealth Generation: What can fishing communities do to diversify their economies? What is the potential of ocean technology? What are some community economic models that can be used to further engage and continue to build capacity in coastal communities?
This workshop will also include a lunchtime session on Assessing the Social Impacts of Industrial Development. Through small table discussions, the Rural Secretariat will lead this fun, engaging and participatory process while providing opportunities for instant feedback.
You are also invited to attend a Memorial Presents public forum on Business Clusters and Regional Development: Fact or Fashion? This will be held in Arnold's Cove at Tricentia Academy on March 15th from 7:00-9:00pm.
Workshop registration is free and meals during the workshop are provided by the Harris Centre.
Please pass this on to anyone else who may be interested!
The registration deadline is March 2, 2012
