School of Music professor releases two new recordings

Two new CDs on the Centaur label represent the research interests of Dr. Paul Rice, professor, School of Music, titled Great Britain Triumphant! and Thomas A. Arne: Overtures and Cantatas.

Both disks feature editions of little-known music that Dr. Rice chose and edited from either hand-written manuscripts or early published copies. He also prepared the performance materials that were used in the recording sessions. The first of the two recordings, Thomas A. Arne: Overtures and Cantatas, features four cantatas and four overtures by one of the most important theatre composers in 18th century Britain.

The second recording, Great Britain Triumphant!, features repertoire that Dr. Rice examines in his 2010 book, British Music and the French Revolution. The music looks at the events in France from a British perspective, and features music by leading British composers of the late 18th century such as William Shield, James Hook and Thomas Attwood.

Both recordings enjoyed the support of the Office of Research at Memorial and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
