Dr. Dawn Bignell, Department of Biology, has been recognized by the American Phytopathological Society (APS). The group has awarded Dr. Bignell with the Schroth Faces of the Future - New Frontiers in Plant Bacteriology Award for 2012. The award acknowledges early career scientists within 10 years of receiving their PhD and whose research and forward thinking have positioned them to be future leaders in the field of plant bacteriology. As part of the award, she will be given the opportunity to present her research in a special symposium at the society's annual meeting in Rhode Island, $500 for travel costs and the chance to submit a mini-review for publication.
Dr. Donna Moralejo, School of Nursing, has received an Award of Merit from the Community and Hospital Infection Control Association of Canada (CHICA-Canada) for her work on training modules to help healthcare workers control infections. The e-learning modules, titled Infection Prevention and Control: The Team Approach, are designed for healthcare workers and are offered through Georgian College. Dr. Moralejo is also director of education on the CHICA board of directors, and is half way through her second three-year term. This is her second Award of Merit from CHICA. The first was in 2006 for her work as part of an advisory group that developed CHICA-Canada's two-term course on infection prevention and control for novice infection control practitioners.
Dr. Bridget Fernandez, Faculty of Medicine, has been extended in the role of acting chair of the Discipline of Genetics in the Faculty of Medicine for a one-year period.
Dr. Alan Goodridge, Faculty of Medicine, has been appointed acting chair of the Discipline of Medicine for a one-year period.
Dr. Gerry Mugford, Faculty of Medicine, has been appointed director of clinical epidemiology for a three-year term.
