New vice-chair for Board of Regents

Eleanor Swanson, director of health promotion and wellness with the provincial Department of Health and Community Services, was elected as vice-chair of Memorial's Board of Regents on Feb. 9. Ms. Swanson served in the same role from May 2009 to August 2011. She is a native of Buchans, N.L.

Ms. Swanson served on the board as an alumni representative from Sept. 1, 2005, to Aug. 31, 2008, and was re-elected for a second term for the period of Sept. 1, 2008, to Aug. 21, 2011. She was subsequently appointed as a provincial government representative spanning Nov. 21, 2011, to Nov. 20, 2014.

In her role as vice-chair, Ms. Swanson says she will be more intensely involved with planning and governance as a member of the Board Executive Committee. She will assist in the development of policy to support education and orientation of new regents. She will also assist the chair by attending meetings and special events such as convocation.

Mostly, however, she intends to devote her energy to the overall work of the board.

"I will work with all regents to be the best we can be for Memorial and the betterment of the students," she said.
