Senior leadership team in place at Grenfell Campus

With the recent selection of two key leadership positions at Grenfell Campus, Memorial's west coast campus senior executive team is complete.

Dr. David Peddle was appointed to the position of associate vice-president (Grenfell Campus) academic by the executive committee of Memorial University's Board of Regents on Friday, Jan. 27.

Dr. Antony Card was appointed to the position of associate vice-president (Grenfell Campus) research by the executive committee of the Board on Thursday, Feb. 9.

Born in Corner Brook, Dr. Peddle has been affiliated with Memorial University for 29 years as a student, teaching assistant, alumnus, sessional lecturer, professor, program chair (humanities) and divisional head (arts). Prior to his appointment at Memorial in 2000, he taught for two years in the foundation program of the University of King's College in Halifax, N.S. Dr. Peddle is co-editor of Philosophy and Freedom (UTP) and has written numerous articles and book chapters in the fields of political philosophy and the philosophy of religion.

"The addition of Dr. Peddle further strengthens our senior administrative team at Grenfell," said Dr. Mary Bluechardt, vice-president, Grenfell Campus. "Our campus' growth and development is transforming us into a more involved, more complex institution.

"Dr. Peddle's expertise, experience and student-centred philosophy will fortify the teaching and learning portfolio at our campus."

Dr. Card is currently the dean of the School of Human Kinetics and Recreation. He will begin his new role on July 1, 2012. Since joining Memorial University in 2002, he has been with HKR in various roles including assistant professor, associate professor, associate director, director and finally, the position he holds today. He has a national and international reputation in the areas of childhood obesity, inactivity and comprehensive school health. Dr. Card has been successful in obtaining grants to study nutrition, obesity and healthy living including conducting an evaluation of Newfoundland and Labrador's school health promotion and research on provincial youth smoking rates.

"Dr. Card's strong background in collaborative and community research is an excellent fit for Grenfell's associate vice-president research position," said Dr. Bluechardt. "The strategic goals of Grenfell's Research Office focus on collaboration, interdisciplinary research and fostering partnerships and alliances in our region and beyond. Dr. Card has a demonstrated record of fostering opportunities for outreach and partnership development. His research in the fields of health and wellness and health promotion is also advantageous as Grenfell continues to advance a Centre for Aging and bridge with Western Regional School of Nursing."

Dr. Peddle holds a PhD in political philosophy from the University of Ottawa, and an MA and BA in philosophy from Memorial University of Newfoundland. Dr. Card holds a PhD from the University of Bedfordshire in Bedford, U.K., and an MA and BA from the University of Southampton in Hampshire, U.K.
Drs. Peddle and Card join Dr. Bluechardt, vice-president, Grenfell Campus, and Mr. Gary Bradshaw, associate vice-president (administration and finance) Grenfell Campus, to form Grenfell's senior leadership team.
