Orientation 2011 at Grenfell a retro throwback

By Pamela Gill

Grenfell's Orientation 2011 is all about informing and involving students to give them a head start on university. The transition from high school to university can be a challenging one for students, and parents. Orientation week at Grenfell Campus, Memorial University of Newfoundland, will help ease the stress by creating a fun and informative start to university.

This year's theme is Retro Throwback; it'll give students a chance not only to look to the future and their new academic paths, but also reflect on the places they come from. Activities and events will be created that will bring students back to their childhoods, such as a slumber party, fire sing-along and more.

Rebecca McCarthy, orientation co-ordinator, has added some new fun activities that will keep students interested and engaged.

"Orientation is shaping up to reflect the campus' ongoing changes and expansion," said Ms. McCarthy. "We want to embrace the past while celebrating the future and to encourage all students to get involved in our tight-knit community. We're shaking up the normal routine and adding brand new events by focusing on giving students opportunities to bond with other students, win awesome prizes, and feel larger than life at Grenfell."

"We want to make the easiest transition possible for new students coming to Grenfell Campus," added Justin Coombs, marketing co-ordinator for Orientation 2011. "Hopefully with some new activities and ideas, the transition will be something students will enjoy."

Orientation events will include Grenfell's annual Welcome Show, an auction, fire sing-along, the ever–popular game night hosted by the Ferriss Hodgett Library, a slumber party, Zumba, aquacise and more.

Parent Orientation will be held Sunday, Sept. 4, and Monday, Sept. 5, 1-3 p.m. in the Fine Arts Building Theatre.

Non-traditional Student Orientation for mature, transfer or part-time students will be held on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 1:30-3:30 p.m. in the atrium of the Fine Arts Building.
