Address to convocation and presidential installation
Presentation of the president and vice-chancellor, Robert Simmonds, chair, Board of Regents
It is my privilege to introduce Memorial’s new president and vice-chancellor to Convocation.
As you may know, as chairperson of the Board of Regents since November 2008, I also had the privilege of chairing the committee that successfully searched for and found the university’s next president and vice-chancellor.
We were facing some challenges at the time including some concern about our ability to conclude a successful search. But squarely faced, all challenges can produce great opportunity and this challenge surely has.
The members of the committee brought enthusiasm, optimism, professionalism and energy to the task. This diverse assembly of talented people from both within and without the institution took its mandate seriously and set out with one goal – with the clear wishes of Government and every Newfoundlander and Labradorian -- to find the very best president and vice-chancellor for Memorial University of Newfoundland.
And we did – we are here today for this very special ceremony to install Dr. Gary Kachanoski as president and vice-chancellor.
Mr. Chancellor, as chairperson of the Board of Regents, I have the honour to present to you Gary Kachanoski, Bachelor of Science (Honours), Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy.
Born and raised in western Canada, he has made the trek eastward to lead Memorial for the next five years. He is a man with a specialized background in soil science. He is an academic in the truest sense of the word – a committed teacher and a diligent researcher who is dedicated to serving the needs of the community. He is a man with great experience and skill in university administration and leadership.
We welcome Dr. Kachanoski to this important leadership role at the province’s university and all members of the Board of Regents pledge to assist and support him as he undertakes this vital position.
Mr. Chancellor, on behalf of the Board of Regents of this University, I ask you to install Gary Kachanoski as President and Vice-Chancellor of Memorial University of Newfoundland.
