Honouring the legacy and memory of the late Dr. Jon Lien, a limited number of tickets were sold on the special painting In Good Hands by Toby Rabinowitz, a St. John’s artist. The draw for the painting and announcement of the winner took place Friday, March 4 in the Science building at Memorial University. A cheque for $3,000 was presented at that time.

“All funds raised by the ticket sales will go into growing the Dr. Jon Lien Memorial Scholarship Fund,” said Julie Huntington, spokesperson for the Dr. Jon Lien Scholarship Committee.

In Jon Lien's 30-year career at Memorial as a memorable professor of animal behaviour, he became known to Newfoundlanders as “the whale man.” His efforts to protect whales and fishermen brought him international acclaim. He was a pioneer in the development of alarms to warn whales away from fishermens' nets. He inspired initiatives in marine conservation that have generated action in saving marine protected areas throughout Canada and Newfoundland.

“To honour a man whose achievements will have impact for generations to come, the Dr. Jon Lien Memorial Scholarship has been chosen as a fitting way to build a lasting legacy,” said Dr. Donald McKay, a friend and colleague of Dr. Lien.

“With the generous help of friends, colleagues, students, and family, this endowed scholarship has grown steadily since Jon's death on April 14, 2010, and will enable an entering graduate student to pursue studies in marine animal behaviour, marine conservation, coastal community revitalization, or the solution to a current fishery challenge. The first scholarship will be awarded in 2012.”

The special painting by Toby Rabinowitz offered in the draw reminds us that the future belongs to our communities and our children.

"Jon derived much pleasure from all living things that he met and he nurtured our understanding of the world,” said Ms. Rabinowitz of her appreciation of Dr. Lien.
