Mission of a lifetime

Ron Lewis has gotten to explore Antarctica up close and personal this fall. The research lab co-ordinator with the CREAIT Network took part in an once-in-a-lifetime research mission. Along with other scientists and researchers from the Australian Maritime College (AMC), University of Tasmania (UTAS), Ifremer, which is based in France, and the Australian Antarctic Division, he tested and studyed autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) in the harsh conditions. "The system that I tested is a long-range emergency location system for the AUV for specifically this type of environment," he said in an e-mail interview. "I also get the opportunity to evaluate the facilities and infrastructure to decide if it is feasible and safe to operate the Memorial Explorer in a sea ice environment." Mr. Lewis is set to be back in this province next month.
