Several members of the Memorial University community were recently
elected to the executive of the community organization Women in
Science and Engineering (WISE) NL. Gloria Montano of Engineering
and Applied Science is the incoming president. Immediate
Past-President, Dr. Laura Halfyard of the Marine Institute, joins
psychology student Christine Fontaine as of co-director of the
Student Summer Employment Program, WISE’s flagship and
award-winning student engagement program. Dr. Octavia Dobre of
Engineering will represent the IEEE, engineering grad student Erika
Beronich is the WISE Graduate Student Section rep, Jennifer Monk of
the Ocean Sciences Centre is a director, medical student Erica
Lester is a member-at-large, and Ravinuthala Swathi is the WISE
undergraduate rep. In addition, Mona El-Tahan, a founding member of
WISE NL rejoins as a director and Ashley Henderson remains the SSEP
program administrator. The first WISE NL 2010 speaker was Dr.
Terry-Lynn Young of the Faculty of Medicine discussing her
ground-breaking research on a genetic heart defect.
