NotableMemorial’s chancellor, retired Canadian general and chief of defence staff Rick Hillier received the Lincoln Alexander Outstanding Leader Award Jan. 13 from the University of Guelph’s College of Management and Economics (CME). Gen. Hillier was honoured for his exceptional abilities as a communicator with soldiers, the public and the media at a time of increased activity in the Canadian Forces; for improving the image and sustainability of the Forces both domestically and internationally; and for his efforts to lobby the federal government for increased military funding.
Dr. Christopher Kovacs, Faculty of Medicine, has been appointed as a member of the committee on Dietary Reference Intakes for Vitamin D and Calcium, recently established by Institute of Medicine of the National Academies. This committee will undertake a study to assess current relevant data and update as appropriate the dietary reference intakes for vitamin D and calcium. This study is supported by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (National Institutes of Health, Food and Drug Administration, Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion), U.S. Department of Agriculture (Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion, Agricultural Research Service), U.S. Department of Defense (Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center), and Health Canada. This is a 24-month study and the first meeting of the committee is planned for March 26-27, 2009, in Washington, DC.
