Dr. Aloysius Patrick O'Brien
Aly O'Brien, one of the province's last native speakers of the Irish language, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, aged 93. To help keep Gaelic alive in Newfoundland, Mr. O'Brien taught himself how to speak it and taught it to others. Dr. O’Brien spent seven years at Memorial’s Oxen Pond Botanical Park, later renamed the Botanical Garden. For his efforts he was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree at Memorial’s fall convocation in 1982. In May 2007, the Garden renamed two trails in honour of Dr. O'Brien, as part of the Garden's Salute To Our Builders 30th anniversary celebrations.
