Program Requirements

Major Program

Students who choose English as their Major must include 36 credit hours in courses in the subject, including:

a) English 2000 and 2001;

b) English 3200 or 3201;

c) Three credit hours in Canadian literature: 2150, 2151, 2160, 3152, 3153, 3155, 3156, 3157, 3158, 4821, 4822, 4850-4860;

d) Three credit hours in American literature: 2160, 2213, 2214, 3260, 4251, 4260, 4261, 4270;

e) Six credit hours at the 4000- level*;

f) Nine credit hours in additional English courses.

*These six credit hours may not be chosen from courses conducted by another Department.

g) At least nine credit hours must be at the 3000-level.

h) Students must normally complete English 2000 and English 2001 before they are eligible to register for courses at the 4000-level.


The English Department also offers a specialization in Drama/Theatre. Admission to the Drama Specialization is by application only after English 2002 has been completed. Honours Program

Students who choose to complete an Honours in English must complete 60 credit hours in the subject, including:

a) English 2000 and 2001;

b) One of English 3200 or 3201;

c) Two of 2600,  3500, 3600;

d) One course in Canadian literature: 2150, 2151, 2160, 3152, 3153, 3155, 3156, 3157, 3158, 4821, 4822, 4852-4860;

e) One course in American literature: 2160, 2213, 2214, 3260, 4251, 4260, 4261, 4270;

f) One pre-19th century course: 2210, 3001, 3002, 3006, 3021, 3022, 3130, 3181, 3190, 3710, 3715, 4000, 4010, 4030, 4031, 4040, 4041, 4050, 4051, 4210, 4211, 4500, 4501, 4600, 4601, 4800, 4805;

g) One 19th century course: 2211, 2214, 3152, 3160, 3161, 3171, 3172, 3173, 3175, 3190, 3302, 3333, 3710, 3711, 3819, 3830, 4001, 4050, 4051, 4060, 4061, 4070, 4251, 4260, 4300, 4805, 4817, 4821, 4851;

h) One 20th century or 21st century course: 2013, 2150, 2151, 2212, 2213, 2811, 2813, 3152, 3153, 3155, 3156, 3157, 3158, 3160, 3161, 3171, 3172, 3173, 3175, 3190, 3260, 3333, 3711, 3713, 3714, 3811, 3819, 3830, 3840, 3843, 3844, 4001, 4070, 4071, 4080, 4260, 4261, 4270, 4300, 4301, 4302, 4817, 4821, 4822, 4850;

i) English 4100;

j) English 4101;

k) English 4900;

l) Twelve credit hours in additional English courses, three of which must be at the 3000-level and six of which must be at the 4000- level;

m) English 4999 (This course is the Honours Essay).

Notes:

n) At least 36 of the 60 credit hours required must be in English at the 3000- level or above. Courses at the 4000-level may not be chosen from those conducted by another department.

o) A course that considers more than one nationality or century may fulfill the requirement for one or the other but not, of course, for both categories.


Minor Program

Students who choose English as their minor must complete at least 24 credit hours in the subject. These must include:

a) One of English 2002, 2003, 2004, 2211, 2212, 2213, 2214, 2811;

b) One of English 3200 or 3201;

c) Three credit hours in Canadian literature: 2150, 2151, 2160, 3152, 3153, 3155, 3156, 3157, 3158, 4821, 4822, 4850-4860;

d) Nine credit hours in additional English courses.

At least nine credit hours must be at the 3000- level.

Requirements for the minor may not be chosen from courses conducted by another department.


 

Joint Honours Program

See General Regulations for Honours Degree.

Students who choose to complete a Joint Honours in English and another major subject must complete at least 39 credit hours in courses in English beyond the first-year.

The 39 credit hours shall include:

a) English 2000 and 2001

b) One of English 3200 or 3201;

c) Three credit hours in Canadian literature: 2150, 2151, 2160, 3152, 3153, 3155, 3156, 3157, 3158, 4821, 4822, 4850-4860;

d) English 4100 and 4101;

e) English 4900;

f) Three credit hours in pre-19th century literature (excluding 3200/3201):2210, 3021, 3002, 3006, 3022, 3181, 3710, 4000, 4010, 4030, 4031, 4040, 4041, 4050, 4051, 4210, 4211, 4800, 4805;

g) Three credit hours in 19th century literature: 2211, 2214, 3152, 3171, 3172, 3173, 3175, 3190, 3302, 3710, 3711, 3819, 3830, 4050, 4051, 4060, 4061, 4070, 4251, 4260, 4805;

h) Three credit hours in 20th century or 21st centruy literature: 2013, 2150, 2151, 2212, 2213, 2811, 3152, 3153, 3155, 3156, 3157, 3158, 3160, 3161, 3171, 3172, 3173, 3175, 3190, 3260, 3712, 3811, 3830, 3840, 3843, 3844, 4070, 4071, 4080, 4260, 4261, 4270, 4300, 4301, 4302, 4850;

i) Nine credit hours in additional English courses, three of which must be at the 3000-level and six of which must be at the 4000- level.

N.B. At least 27 of the 39 credit hours in English beyond the first-year must be at the 3000- level.


Additional Information

1. To register in a 3000-level course, students must have completed at least two courses at the 2000- level.

2. To register in a 4000-level course, students must have completed at least two courses at the 3000- level.

3. The English programs at Sir Wilfred Grenfell Campus and those at the St. John’s campus may not include the same courses. Students who plan to transfer from one institution to the other, should consult the Calendar and the Office of the Registrar.
