Place Names of the Avalon Peninsula of the Island of Newfoundland
E.R. Seary (Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1971)
Having laid the foundation of Newfoundland toponymy in his early
publications, Seary turned to a similar study of the oldest settled
area of the country, the Avalon Peninsula.
The work surveyed the linguistic origins and the structure of
the place-names, leading to the main section of the book, the
"Gazetteer and Index of Place Names," in which most of the Avalon
toponyms were traced from their first appearance in early maps to
contemporary authorized spellings. The work is no longer in
print.
