Reminiscences of James P. Howley: Selected Years
W.J. Kirwin, G.M. Story, Patrick A. O’Flaherty, eds. (Toronto: The Champlain Society, 1997)
On its founding the Centre was encouraged to publish critical Newfoundland works. Early in the collaboration of G.M. Story, J.D.A. Widdowson, and W.J. Kirwin in lexicography, a typescript describing the explorations of J.P. Howley, the geologist, came to light.
Story obtained a photocopy, which was found to contain numerous local words that ended up in DNE. The reminiscences seemed attractive to study, and a number of articles drawn from it were published by Story and Kirwin. Plans were made to have a selection from the text published by the Champlain Society (Toronto).
After the sad passing of Story in 1994, members of ELRC proposed to complete this edition of the selected reminiscences and P.A. O'Flaherty was invited to become co-editor of the work. The collaboration, including contributions by Jacob Larkin, was fruitful and the work was published in 1997. An on-line version can be found at the website of the Champlain Society.
Since 1997, the co-editors, with the support of ELRC, have completed the textual editing of the entire work. It was launched in March 2010 as the first original e-publication of the QE II Library's Digital Archive Initiative and may be viewed here.
