Family Names of the Island of Newfoundland
E.R. Seary (Memorial University of Newfoundland, 1976).
Corrected edition by William J. Kirwin. (Montreal: McGill-Queen's
University Press, 1998)
As research continued, Seary observed the close connections between many place-names and similar surnames of the residents. He next produced a complementary dictionary of over 3,000 surnames, drawn from the Official List of Electors (1955).
The articles presented information about the ethnic sources of
the names, largely in England, Scotland, Ireland, and France, and
abundant data about the presence of the families in this country
documented in government and church records and other sources.
Since the stencilled work had to be reprinted several times to meet
demand, officials in the J.R. Smallwood Centre for Newfoundland
Studies proposed a reprint of the work, and a new Corrected Edition
(ed. William J. Kirwin), a large handsome volume, was published by
McGill-Queen's University Press in 1998.
